The eagerly awaited biographical film Stelios, which pays tribute to the iconic Greek folk and rebetiko singer Stelios Kazantzidis (1931–2001), will debut on the U.S. West Coast. The screening is set for May 4 at 6:30 p.m. at Harmony Gold in West Hollywood, as part of the Los Angeles Greek Film Festival (LAGFF), and will be followed by a reception.
This compelling film narrates the journey of a young refugee of Pontic Greek heritage who, despite numerous challenges, ascended to fame through sheer talent and determination. It paints a rich portrait of a man who profoundly impacted the Greek populace, encapsulating themes of music, friendships, love, conflict, and the vibrant nightlife.
Director Giorgos Tsemberopoulos expressed, “I aimed to illuminate the spirit of a man who sang for millions. While his voice opened many doors, it was family, love, and fame that ultimately deprived him of personal peace.”
This significant film production, the largest of the year by Tanweer, stars Christos Mastoras in the lead role, with a screenplay crafted by Katerina Bei. The cast also features Klelia Renesi, Asimenia Voulioti, Agoritsa Oikonomou, Dimitris Kapouranis, and Anna Symeonidou. The film will be released in the U.S. and Canada on May 9 and will screen in New York at Village East (Second Avenue & 12th Street).
