A British tourist was apprehended in Bali after allegedly assaulting a taxi driver, inciting the fury of a group of locals who pursued him and attacked him with makeshift weapons until law enforcement intervened.
As reported by the Daily Mail, the incident occurred on Thursday morning in a parking lot located in the Bandung area and involved 30-year-old Brandon Joseph. Witnesses claim that Joseph randomly attacked 31-year-old driver Herlido Emanuel Nino after the latter offered him a ride, noting that Joseph seemed “confused” when he exited a white van.
Details of the Assault
Nino reportedly questioned Joseph about the initial assault, at which point Joseph struck him again without warning, inflicting significant injuries, according to a local police spokesperson who spoke to the detikBali news agency. “The attacker hit the victim again on the lips, resulting in broken front teeth,” the spokesman stated.
Footage from the scene shows Nino, in a red T-shirt with blood on his face, standing by as other local taxi drivers attacked a half-naked Joseph, who was only wearing black shorts. Amid the chaos, another man in a torn shirt tried to escape while Joseph, confronted by the crowd, ran toward the white van, which locals then began to stone.
Police Response and Arrests
Shortly thereafter, police arrived and arrested Joseph. Local authorities reported that he was first taken to Bali Jibaran Hospital for a medical evaluation before being transported to the police station for questioning.
Investigation Underway
Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. Photos indicate Joseph received a bandage on his head outside the police station. Reports indicate that the Briton was staying in Kangu, a popular coastal area in Bali renowned for its stunning coastline.
