Weather: Autumn weekend with rains and drop in temperature – Which areas are affected
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

A shift in Greece’s weather is on the horizon, as instability is anticipated starting today, bringing cooler temperatures and rainfall, particularly affecting central and northern regions. Meteorologists attribute this shift to an “air tide” that introduces cold air masses, signaling an early onset of autumn.

Theodoros Kolydas noted in a post that temperatures may drop by 5 to 7 degrees Celsius by mid-next week, contributing to a period of instability.

Meteorologist Giorgos Tsatrafyllias mentioned that weekend showers are set to impact mainly central and northern Greece, while island regions and Attica are expected to see minimal effects.

He added that as the new week progresses, rainfall will spread to additional areas, with temperatures potentially plunging to 6-7 degrees below seasonal averages.

Maximum Temperature of 36.1 °C on Friday, May 9

Crete experienced exceptionally high temperatures yet again on Friday, 09/05. Data from the National Observatory of Athens/meteo.gr indicated that the highest temperature was recorded at Malia in Heraklion (36.1 °C), followed closely by Falasarna in Chania, Sisi in Lassithi, and Agii Pantes in Chania/ELMEPA (35.8 °C).

The accompanying map illustrates temperature distributions throughout the country. Notably, 356 of the 534 active stations (approximately 67%) recorded temperatures exceeding 25 °C, 82 stations (around 15%) surpassed 30 °C, and 6 stations exceeded 35 °C.

Today’s Weather

The mainland will see clouds, except for the western parts of Epirus, Central Greece, and the Peloponnese. Showers and thunderstorms are likely in Macedonia and Thrace until morning, later affecting all continental areas apart from the western portions of Epirus, Sterea, and the Peloponnese. Hail is possible, especially in mountainous regions. Dust levels will be elevated in southern areas of the country.

Temperatures in Western Macedonia will range from 10 to 21 degrees Celsius, while the rest of Macedonia and Thrace will see temperatures between 14 and 23. Thessaly will range from 14 to 26, Epirus from 11 to 27, Sterea and Peloponnese from 14 to 30, Ionian Islands from 13 to 24, North and East Aegean Islands from 16 to 29, Cyclades from 17 to 26, Dodecanese from 19 to 30, and Crete from 18 to 28 degrees Celsius.

In the Dodecanese, winds will initially blow from the southeast at 3 to 5 Beaufort before shifting to the northwest at 2 to 4 Beaufort by afternoon. The rest of the Aegean will experience northerly winds at 2 to 4 Beaufort, rising to 3 to 5 Beaufort by morning. In the Ionian Sea, winds will come from the northwest at 2 to 4 Beaufort, with morning gusts reaching 3 to 5 Beaufort.

In Attica, expect intermittent clouds with a chance of localized rain from noon. Winds will blow from the north at 2 to 4 Beaufort, with relatively high dust levels in the atmosphere. In central Athens, temperatures will range from 21 to 30 degrees Celsius.

In Thessaloniki, cloudy weather with rain and possibly thunderstorms is forecasted. Winds will be from the north up to 3 Beaufort, shifting to the south of similar intensity by noon. Temperatures in central Thessaloniki will vary from 17 to 23 degrees Celsius.

Weather Forecast for Sunday (11/05)

For Macedonia and Thessaly, expect clouds with localized showers, and sporadic thunderstorms in midday and afternoon hours. By evening, these conditions will be confined to central and eastern Macedonia and will diminish.

Initially, clear skies are expected across most of the country, but clouds will develop around midday in the northern Ionian, mainland, and gradually in the central and northern Aegean, bringing local rain and possibly isolated thunderstorms, mainly in the central and northern mainland. Conditions will improve by evening.

Northerly winds are expected at 3 to 5 Beaufort, occasionally reaching up to 6 Beaufort in the Aegean Sea.

Temperatures will drop, returning to seasonal normals, reaching 20 to 22 degrees Celsius in the north, 24 to 26 degrees in the rest of the regions, and 27 degrees Celsius in some southern mainland areas.

Weather Forecast for Monday (12/05)

Expect a few clouds that will increase quickly in the southern Ionian, gradually extending to the mainland and southern Aegean, with local rain or showers expected. Sporadic thunderstorms may occur from midday in the Ionian Sea and mainland, from the afternoon in the Cyclades and Crete, and by evening in the Dodecanese; conditions will clear up in the west by evening.

Winds across most areas will be variable at 3 to 4 Beaufort, while in the Ionian Sea, winds will blow from the west at 3 to 4 Beaufort, and in the Aegean Sea, from the north at 4 to 5 Beaufort, reaching up to 6 Beaufort near Rhodes – Kastelorizo.

Little change in temperature is anticipated.

Weather Forecast for Tuesday (13/05)

Cloudy conditions are expected in the eastern mainland, Evia, and the morning hours in Crete, the Cyclades, and the Dodecanese with localized showers. Sporadic thunderstorms are likely in the midday and afternoon hours in the eastern mainland. The remainder of the country will see few clouds that will increase by midday and afternoon over the mainland, bringing local showers and brief isolated thunderstorms.

Northerly winds will blow at 3 to 5 Beaufort, with local gusts reaching 6 Beaufort in the Aegean Sea.

There will be a slight drop in temperature in the north and east.

Weather Forecast for Wednesday (14/05)

Expect partly cloudy skies in the Ionian Sea, mainland, and Evia, with local showers and possible isolated thunderstorms in the midday and afternoon hours, especially in the mainland mountains. Generally clear weather is anticipated elsewhere.

Winds will initially blow from the west northwest at 3 to 4 Beaufort, shifting to south southeast later with similar intensity. In the eastern regions, winds will come from the north at 3 to 5 Beaufort, with local gusts reaching 6 Beaufort in the Aegean Sea.

No significant temperature changes are expected.
