According to Reuters, Washington suspects that Iran may retaliate for Saturday night’s attack on its nuclear facilities within the next couple of days, based on information from two U.S. sources.
In a related development, a senior Iranian official informed CNN on Monday that Tehran expects the United States to “bear the consequences of its involvement in the conflict rather than simply supporting Israel and executing its agenda without bearing the costs.” The official also indicated Iran’s willingness to engage in military operations that could extend for as long as two years.
Donald Trump’s order to strike three Iranian nuclear facilities on Sunday sparked a surge of anti-American sentiment in Iran, with many people demanding retaliation. An anti-U.S. and anti-Israel rally took place in Tehran on Sunday night, where attendees voiced their calls for revenge. This follows a surprise attack by Israel on Iran 11 days ago, resulting in daily exchanges of fire that have claimed hundreds of lives.
“Morale is high, and the Iranian public’s unprecedented demand for action against Israel is significant,” the official shared with CNN, noting that the calls for strikes against Israel reflect Iran’s escalating military strategies.
He also indicated that Iran views calls for a temporary ceasefire as “a tactic to gauge Iran’s readiness to maintain the fight.” Nonetheless, he stated that Iran anticipates the conflict might last up to two years and that the country is prepared for it.
