The Minister of Immigration, Makis Voridis, addressed the upcoming bill from the Ministry of Immigration, set to be unveiled in May. He discussed initial outcomes of the new policy and Europe’s evolving approach to illegal immigration during a broadcast on Action 24.
Voridis stated, “Individuals who are denied asylum and remain in the country will encounter a significantly harsher legal environment than they do now.” He announced that the new bill will be submitted in May, which aims to tighten regulations on illegal entry and residence. He emphasized that “enhancing the merit system and bolstering administrative detention are essential strategies for improving the return mechanism.”
The minister highlighted that the new regulatory framework would be backed by a functional administrative system to ensure effective enforcement of the return policy. He also pointed out Europe’s movement toward stricter immigration regulations.
“In the first quarter, migration flows have decreased by 27%. Since I took office a month and a half ago, the population in asylum facilities has dropped by 12.9%. This reflects improved management, and we are committed to continuing in this direction,” he added. Commenting on Europe’s changing stance, he remarked: “Previously, there was a misconception that benefits and integration policies would address the issue. That approach has failed. Europe is now prioritizing effective border management and the return of illegal migrants.”
