The USS Nimitz, one of the most formidable aircraft carriers in the US Navy, is headed to the Middle East in response to the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran. Real-time tracking data from MarineTraffic shows that the Nimitz, which was previously deployed in the South China Sea, has altered its course and is now traveling westward.
Currently, the carrier is navigating through the Strait of Malacca, situated between Sumatra (Indonesia) and Malaysia, a key global shipping lane.
US Navy Remains Mum on Mission Details
When reached for comment by Agence France-Presse (AFP), the US Navy chose not to disclose any details regarding the carrier’s movements or the objectives of the mission.
Vietnam Visit Canceled
The Nimitz was initially scheduled for a four-day port visit in Da Nang, central Vietnam, which included a reception on board on June 20. However, this visit has been canceled. A Vietnamese government official informed AFP, referencing a letter from the US Embassy that mentioned an “urgent operational need” cited by the US Department of Defense as the cause for the rapid cancellation.
The unexpected redeployment of the USS Nimitz coincides with rising tensions in the Middle East, as recent military confrontations between Iran and Israel heighten fears of a wider conflict.
