Upgrades to the infrastructure at the main passenger port of Piraeus are advancing swiftly in preparation for the summer season and the anticipated rise in passenger traffic.
A series of immediate interventions is being carried out as part of broader investment efforts by PPA S.A. over recent years, aimed at enhancing services and providing a superior experience for passengers.
Recent data indicates that Piraeus port accommodates around 20 million passengers each year, making it the largest port in Europe and one of the biggest globally.
Historically, passenger traffic at Piraeus tends to surge during the summer months, highlighting the necessity for improved infrastructure and services, in line with PPA S.A.’s ongoing commitment to addressing community needs.
Current initiatives include renovating passenger terminal buildings, installing covered waiting areas and air conditioning systems, adding new seating and greenery, and enhancing signage.
Future plans involve creating parking spaces for vehicles and trucks during boarding and disembarking, strengthening security protocols, providing free fresh water through coolers, setting up chemical toilets, and implementing a waste sorting and recycling system.
Additionally, the port’s horizontal markings are being updated, with a focus on enhancing accessibility for individuals with disabilities, including special markings and coloring for ramps.
This comprehensive set of actions aims to transform the daily operations of the central passenger port of Piraeus while reinforcing its strategic importance as a primary gateway to the Greek islands and a vital tourist hub.
PPA S.A. emphasizes that all interventions prioritize safety, accessibility, and quality service for passengers, aligning with the State and the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy’s vision of a modern, safe, and efficient port.
“These upgrades are part of a proactive strategy in preparation for the peak season, systematically carried out by PPA S.A. each year to ensure the operational readiness of the port,” stated PPA S.A.
As the summer travel season commences, the port of Piraeus reaffirms its dedication to safely and efficiently serving the thousands of passengers it welcomes daily, demonstrating its commitment to a passenger-centered approach.
