Fifth Day of Israel-Iran Conflict Escalates – U.S. Urges Emergency Talks with Tehran
As military hostilities between Israel and Iran enter their fifth day, U.S. President Donald Trump is cutting his G7 summit participation in Canada short to return to Washington due to the worsening situation in the Middle East.
The White House confirmed late Monday that Trump is departing the G7 “due to developments in the region.” In a vague post on Truth Social, the President advised Iranians to “evacuate Tehran immediately,” without providing further details. Shortly after, Iranian state media (IRNA) reported explosions in the capital early Tuesday.
Intensified Combat and Increasing Casualties
The conflict has escalated dramatically, with Iran launching its ninth missile attack overnight, triggering air raid sirens in several regions of Israel. The Israeli military (IDF) reported that its air defense systems intercepted multiple incoming projectiles, allowing civilians to exit shelters by early Tuesday.
Israel has conducted precise strikes on Iranian missile facilities, air force assets, and media outlets, including the state-run IRINN broadcaster. The Israeli government claims these operations have notably delayed Iran’s nuclear ambitions and eliminated key military and scientific figures.
The casualty figures are rising on both sides, with 24 fatalities reported in Israel and at least 224 in Iran, according to initial estimates.
U.S. Advocates for Diplomatic Solutions
In light of the escalating tensions, the White House has reportedly suggested direct talks with Tehran to seek a ceasefire and resume nuclear negotiations. According to Axios, discussions are in progress regarding a potential meeting between U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
International concern is on the rise. China has advised its citizens to leave Israel “as soon as possible,” while France has called for an immediate cessation of attacks on civilians from both sides. “If the United States can secure a ceasefire, it would be very welcome,” French President Emmanuel Macron stated at a G7 press conference.
High Stakes and Heightened Rhetoric
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu did not dismiss the possibility of targeting Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, when questioned by ABC News on Monday. However, sources revealed to CNN that President Trump recently turned down an Israeli proposal to assassinate the Iranian leader.
Trump is expected to arrive in Washington later today with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, indicating a potential shift in U.S. strategy as the conflict risks spreading beyond regional boundaries.
