Construction on the 6th pier at the Port of Thessaloniki is set to commence by the end of June, with an estimated completion timeline of approximately three and a half years, according to Ioannis Tsaras, CEO of the Thessaloniki Port Authority (ThPA).
“We are currently awaiting the final construction permits from the ministry to initiate the work. The contractor is prepared, and we are exploring options to slightly reduce the cost of certain materials without compromising the technical specifications or the pier’s dimensions,” Tsaras noted. He added that the project should be completed within a maximum of 36 months from its start.
“In about three and a half years, we aim to have the pier operational, and we will need everyone’s support to enhance the railway connections, which is also a responsibility of the state,” he said.
“Geopolitical issues have notably raised costs”
Athanasios Liagos, the executive chairman of the ThPA board, emphasized the organization’s readiness to move forward with the projects. “We are prepared to start the implementation of the project, which was initiated with the approval of the master plan,” he stated.
“We are currently assessing the costs associated with the pier. However, it is important to note that recent geopolitical developments have significantly increased project expenses due to rising energy and material costs. Our objective is to commence the project as soon as possible,” Liagos highlighted.
