Two boys, aged 14 and 15, were rescued from the Arachthos River around noon on Wednesday (11/6) near Neochori.
They are expected to be transported to the University General Hospital of Patras by ambulance, accompanied by police, within the next few hours.
Initial reports indicate that CT scans revealed significant brain swelling and fluid in the lungs. Additionally, one of the boys was found to have a fractured neck.
They were submerged for at least 20 minutes, and CPR was performed for over 30 minutes. The extended lack of oxygen poses severe risks to their health. Doctors will closely monitor their conditions over the next 48 hours, a critical period for their recovery.
Timeline
The incident occurred in the early afternoon when four minors went to the Arakhos for a swim. The 14-year-old, who was not a strong swimmer, drifted away and was swept into the river. The 15-year-old attempted to save him but also became trapped. The other two friends quickly sought help from nearby residents as well as the police and fire brigade. Civilians in a boat managed to rescue the two boys.
Emergency services arrived promptly, and rescuers initiated CPR. Both boys were unconscious when taken to the Arta hospital, but reports indicate that medical staff successfully revived them.
