“Our aim is to develop, implement, and operate Greece’s first nuclear program, culminating in the construction of the nation’s initial nuclear reactor,” stated Athlos Energy co-founders Stathis Vlassopoulos and Dionysis Chionis in an interview with Naftemporiki TV.
Dionysis Chionis further explained, “Small modular reactors (SMRs) can be constructed in three years rather than ten, at a cost of 2 billion euros instead of 10 billion, and they offer significant applications beyond electricity generation, such as desalination, hydrogen production, district heating, and supporting energy needs in islands and remote areas.”
Roadmap
He added that the company has already outlined a roadmap for Greece’s transition into the nuclear era. “We estimate around 8 to 10 years to establish the regulatory framework, followed by the construction of the nuclear reactor, which will take an additional 5 to 8 years,” he emphasized.
When asked about interactions with government entities, Stathis Vlassopoulos noted, “The Prime Minister has officially indicated his interest,” and mentioned that the company is engaging with various stakeholders, including industry representatives, academic institutions, and the community.
