“The rights of Greek fisheries derive from the Law of the Sea and the Exclusive Economic Zone,” stated Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, Vassilis Kikilias, during his meeting with EU Commissioner for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Costas Kadis.
He emphasized the necessity of safeguarding these rights to ensure the safe and regulated practice of this vital profession. Kikilias also highlighted the importance of Coast Guard oversight to maintain compliance with coastal proximity regulations and to ensure respect for rules governing bottom trawlers.
The minister underscored the essential role and significance of the fishing industry.
Discussing energy interconnections and maritime infrastructure, he stressed that “the management of energy issues and undersea interconnections, which can result in more affordable electricity, efficient resource use, and regional collaboration, is of great importance to us, and we are prepared to support these European initiatives.”
Kikilias reaffirmed Greece’s dedication to enhancing European cooperation, stating, “We are ready to contribute whatever the European Commission requires from us, whether that involves expertise for our islands, energy resources, desalination plants, or maritime networks.”
He concluded by highlighting that “once again, I emphasize the importance of unity. We recognize that decision-making often requires time. We are committed to improving cooperation and accelerating decision timelines for the benefit of European citizens, including our own in Greece and Cyprus.”
