Warner Bros. and New Line have officially announced that the film “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum” is set to hit theaters on December 17, 2027. This release date aligns with the tradition of the previous six films from the “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” trilogies, all of which premiered in December just before the holiday season.
Antony Serkis, who famously portrayed Gollum, will not only reprise this iconic role but will also take on directing duties. The Oscar-winning trio of Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens will be involved in producing the film, with Warner Bros. confirming their commitment by stating that they “will participate in every step of production,” along with Zain Wiener.
The screenplay will be crafted by Walsh and Boyens, alongside Fibi Gittens and Arti Papageorgiou. Executive producers include Ken Cummings, Serkis, and Jonathan Cavendish from Imaginarium.
The announcement regarding “The Hunt for Gollum” follows a report from Warner Bros. Discovery, which highlighted strong financial results for the first quarter, showing an increase in both streaming service subscribers and profits, as reported by Deadline. The previous six live-action films released by Warner Bros./New Line have amassed over $5.9 billion globally.
