“As the president of the Security Council, Greece prioritizes finding a solution and delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza. The Prime Minister and the government are rightly pursuing this goal as an honest intermediary. Tomorrow, Giorgios Gerapetritis will lead a special Security Council debate focused on the protection of civilians, initiated by the government,” stated Deputy Foreign Minister Tassos Hadjivassiliou during a meeting of the National Defence and Foreign Affairs Committee today.
Hadjivassiliou emphasized that Greece has consistently advocated for the unrestricted flow of humanitarian aid to Gaza. He informed the Committee that today, Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis reestablished communication with the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of the Palestinian Authority regarding humanitarian aid, highlighting that Palestinians value Greece’s support.
The Deputy Foreign Minister noted that Greece continually supports the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). He also mentioned that, at Gerapetritis’s initiative, EU member states have committed to providing humanitarian aid to Gaza. Greece remains open to welcoming more children from the affected region.
He clarified that Greece, as a member of the UN Security Council, addresses the humanitarian crisis in Gaza through institutional channels. “The country has endorsed relevant joint statements in both the Security Council and the European Union,” he emphasized.
In response to opposition claims that Greece voted against revising the EU-Israel Agreement, he clarified that no such vote occurred. He explained, “The decision for the review was made by European diplomacy head Kaya Kalas, without a vote by member states. Greece holds a clear position on the Gaza tragedy, and it is misleading for the opposition to create false impressions.”
Addressing accusations of Greece’s dependency on Israel, the Deputy Foreign Minister firmly stated that such assertions insult the country and its citizens. “Greece adheres to a principled policy and, thanks to the government’s efforts, has built valuable diplomatic capital that allows it to stand confidently and proudly on the world stage,” he concluded.
