According to Russian presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, the European Union is set to incur higher costs and experience a decline in the quality of nitrogen fertilizers due to tariffs imposed on Russian agricultural products. He described the EU’s approach as “self-destructive” during a press briefing.
Peskov stated, “Ultimately, the European Union will find itself purchasing nitrogen fertilizers at elevated prices and lower quality. Our nitrogen fertilizers are of superior quality. With sustained global demand in other markets, we anticipate that Russian products will find their way elsewhere.” He added with sarcasm, “Once again, the Europeans are bound to shoot themselves in the foot.”
His comments followed the European Parliament’s approval on May 15 of a proposal to increase import tariffs on various agricultural products and fertilizers from Russia and Belarus. The new regulations will see tariffs on Russian fertilizers gradually rise over the coming years, effectively making them unaffordable for the European market.
