Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis recently toured the Megara Health Center, one of 160 facilities undergoing extensive renovations funded by the Recovery Fund. This initiative aims to enhance public health infrastructure and digitize services across the board.
The renovation spans approximately 1,200 square meters and includes modernization of equipment, new flooring and ceilings in the laboratory, emergency department, sanitary areas, and other rooms. Upgrades to water and sewage systems were made, along with new electrical installations. The building now features improved energy efficiency with thermal insulation, vapor barriers, heat pumps, and a 550W photovoltaic unit.
The Transformation of the Megara Health Center Inaugurated by Mitsotakis – “By the End of This Four-Year Term, We Will Discuss a New NHS”
Accompanied by Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis and Deputy Minister Irini Agapidaki, the Prime Minister engaged with staff members who emphasized the complete transformation of the center and its extension to a 24/7 operational schedule, catering to the entire Megara region.
Since 2019, staffing at the center has increased by 15, with plans to hire three additional general practitioners and another pediatrician, ensuring that primary healthcare needs in Megara are fully addressed.

At the conclusion of his visit, the Prime Minister remarked:
“During my last visit in 2022, I pledged that Megara would receive a fully renovated, modern health center with adequate staffing. I am thrilled to proclaim that we have fulfilled that promise.
We achieved this by leveraging Recovery Fund resources to significantly upgrade our healthcare infrastructure. The transformation in Megara is just one example of the 160 centers undergoing similar renovations, showcasing the tangible social impact of European funding in the vital healthcare sector.
I commend the Ministry of Health for its swift and effective execution of all projects financed by the Recovery Fund.
However, the most significant praise belongs to you—the management and staff of the health center—for maintaining operations despite the renovation, which is no small feat.
You can now see the fruits of your labor. The Megara region now benefits from a high-quality, 24/7 primary care facility capable of addressing the healthcare needs of both residents and visitors. Congratulations again.
Furthermore, we must express gratitude to the project maturation unit of TAIPED. Securing €36 billion from the Recovery Fund focused our efforts on the efficient and transparent utilization of these crucial European funds.
Each completed project not only brings satisfaction but also fuels our commitment to finish all major initiatives funded by the Recovery Fund. Beyond physical structures and staffing, I particularly want to emphasize the significant advancements in the digital transformation of healthcare.
We will soon provide more updates, together with the Minister and Deputy Minister. Greece, once lagging, is on the path to becoming a leader in Europe in digital patient records, the MyHealth app, and information systems interoperability. For instance, a radiograph taken here can be instantly accessible for a second opinion via technology.
This vital transformation, supported by the Recovery Fund, will enable us to affirm, by the end of this term, that we have established a new National Health System.
In closing, I want to reiterate that none of this could happen without the dedicated personnel of the National Health System, especially in primary care. You were on the frontlines during the pandemic, sustaining the NHS and the nation. We owe you recognition and, wherever possible, financial support for the exceptional service you provide.
So, congratulations and best wishes for the health center.”
