Members of the Greek delegation described their recent discussions as “productive,” highlighting their exchange of views concerning the Monastery of St. Catherine of Sinai during meetings in Cairo.
“We emphasized the political implications and, with all due respect for the Egyptian Justice system, underscored that international law must be considered in matters of world heritage. We requested that the historic monastery’s status quo be preserved,” stated officials from the Greek delegation just before departing from the Egyptian capital. They noted that the Egyptian side had thoroughly examined the intricate legal aspects involved. Reports indicate that both parties agreed to conduct a further technical analysis in the coming days to develop a clear proposal for moving forward.
The consultations underscored the commitment of both President Sisi and the Egyptian government to protect the Greek Orthodox heritage of the monastery without obstruction. Discussions regarding the ownership status are slated for a later date.
The Greek delegation also urged the Egyptians to focus on maintaining the current state and continuity of the monastery, which would be jeopardized without the surrounding land.
