Miltiadis Varvitsiotis, CEO of Skaramangas Shipyards, highlighted the importance of supporting Greek shipyards and investing in international outreach during the 9th Naftemporiki Shipping Conference.
“We must focus on enhancing our global presence. When positive news in shipping emerges, it quickly becomes a priority for readers,” he stressed, underscoring the sector’s growth potential when information is shared effectively.
In his remarks at the first panel discussing the Greek maritime cluster, Varvitsiotis commended Greek shipowner George Prokopiou: “I wouldn’t be here today without the visionary George Prokopiou, who recognized the value of investing in our shipyards,” he noted.
“Financial Investment and Partnerships Required”
Varvitsiotis outlined the fundamental requirements for the survival and growth of Greek shipyards: “Substantial funding and collaborations are essential, along with a strategic commitment from the Greek government to bolster the defense industry, including shipyards. No shipyard can thrive without significant defense contracts.”
He placed particular emphasis on the backing from the Greek shipping community: “Our shipyard primarily services Greek-owned vessels. Greek shipowners embraced the challenge of revitalizing the shipyards.”
In conclusion, Varvitsiotis asserted that revitalizing the shipbuilding industry is a collective effort that requires a national commitment, rather than the initiative of a single investor or organization.
