Melina Travlos, President of the Union of Greek Shipowners, delivered an impactful speech about shipping’s significance in the global economic and geopolitical scene at the 9th Naftemporiki Conference.
“We are confronted with numerous expanding challenges,” she emphasized. “From unrealistic decarbonization targets and increasing protectionism to critical safety issues, these factors continuously test the sector’s resilience.”
In this swiftly evolving global context, the president underscored the necessity for international cooperation and proactive measures. “A global commitment is essential to guarantee the seamless movement of maritime transport. This was the core message I shared with the UN in New York,” she stated.
Strong Proponent of the Greek Economy
Travlos also expressed gratitude to the Greek government and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis for prioritizing maritime security at the UN. “This historic initiative not only honored Greek shipping but also positioned it as a significant player in the global dialogue,” she remarked.
She noted that Greek shipping actively supports the Greek economy, serves as a multi-faceted investor, and acts as a reliable social partner with a substantial humanitarian impact—both individually and collectively.
“We are fortunate, yet carry the great responsibility of being the guardians of the global economy and European stability. This responsibility intensifies as the challenges and crises arise,” she pointed out.
“Our path is a one-way street. We are moving forward,” she concluded.
