Seismic authorities and experts are actively monitoring a recent earthquake that registered a magnitude of 4.8, particularly due to the area’s susceptibility to seismic activity. The initial focus is on analyzing aftershock trends and potential impacts on structures.
Euthymios Lekkas, President of the Earthquake Planning and Protection Organization (OASP) and a Professor of Geology, remarked on ERΤ: “This earthquake occurred in the active tectonic zone at the entrance of the Corinth Gulf, a region known for its significant seismic history. Such occurrences align with the geological characteristics of the area.”
He added, “Given the tectonic complexity and ongoing stress in the region, continuous monitoring is crucial. While there is no immediate cause for concern, the inherent seismic risk in the Corinth Gulf requires diligent oversight to ensure public safety and readiness for possible aftershocks.”
According to the latest data from the Geodynamic Institute, the epicenter was located about 13 kilometers southeast of Galaxidi, with a revised focal depth of 16.8 kilometers. The seismic waves were felt in areas such as Attica, Patras, Nafpaktos, and Nafplio, with reports of perceptibility even in Athens, attributed to the direction in which the seismic energy propagated.
