The latest figures from DESFA, analyzed by Green Tank for April, indicate a return of Russian gas to the country’s primary suppliers.
This update follows recent announcements from the Commission regarding the phased withdrawal of Russian hydrocarbons from the European market over the next three years, aiming for a significant reduction of Russian gas by the end of 2025.
Specifically, in April 2025, after a six-month period, Russian gas topped the list of imports, exceeding LNG by 1.1 TWh. Notably, since November 2024, imports of Russian gas have solely been via pipeline, with no LNG imports recorded.
According to the most recent Eurostat data (March 2025), Greece saw the highest percentage increase (28.4%) in gas consumption among EU-27 countries during the first quarter of 2025. Only five member states reported a decrease in gas consumption, with Sweden, Finland, and Estonia exhibiting declines of over 20% (24.7%, 21.8%, and 20.01%, respectively).
A total of 19 member states reported increased gas consumption, with Austria and Croatia also surpassing a 20% rise alongside Greece (21.7% and 22.1%, respectively). This trend led to an average increase of 7.68% in Russian gas consumption across the EU-27 from 2024 to 2025.
