Farmers in Agia staged a tractor protest today, Tuesday, to voice their frustration over the lack of compensation for the devastation of their 2024 cherry, chestnut, and apple harvests.
This year’s early cherry crops have reportedly suffered significant frost damage, with losses estimated between 70% and 80%.
“We feel unfairly treated by the government and the Ministry of Rural Development. We submitted our damage reports as required, and the loss exceeds 30% of our 2023 production. Cherries were meant to be part of the 2023 compensation program, but that hasn’t materialized. We refuse to accept this injustice toward the producers,” their representatives stated.
They also added, “This is the second time Agia has faced such unfairness. The first was following storm Daniel, where we were initially excluded and later included. Now, other regions with similar crops are being compensated while we are overlooked.”
