To date, over 65,000 early diagnoses and preliminary detections have been recorded through the preventive screenings of the “Prolamvano” health initiative, dramatically enhancing the prospects for full recovery, as reported by the Ministry of Health.
The majority of these cases—approximately 49,000—are linked to the “Fofi Gennimata” breast cancer prevention program, which introduced free preventive screenings for vulnerable age groups three years ago.
Almost 9,000 biopsies have been conducted for individuals who completed self-tests for colorectal cancer prevention, alongside various surgeries. Under the cervical cancer screening initiative, more than 5,200 women have been referred for further assessments.
Additionally, around 4,000 individuals have been sent for ischemia testing within the largest subprogram of “Prolamvano,” which focuses on preventing cardiovascular diseases and caters to individuals aged 30 to 70 years.
“Thanks to preventive exams, we’re saving tens of thousands of lives. There’s little more to say,” highlighted a senior government official coordinating between the Health Ministry and the Prime Minister’s Office.
This official further noted that a significant success of “Prolamvano” is fostering a culture of prevention in Greece—an essential change that hadn’t existed before but is crucial for its future impact.
Over 2.5 Million Citizens Screened for Free
Participation in these four major programs, as well as additional smaller initiatives under “Prolamvano” launched in 2022, has been substantial. To date, more than 2.5 million citizens have taken advantage of free testing opportunities available at 15,000 health facilities.
Within the “Fofi Gennimata” program, which targets women aged 45 to 74, a total of 765,065 digital mammograms have been completed. In terms of cervical cancer prevention, 370,573 women aged 21 to 65 have undergone screenings.
For colorectal cancer prevention, 808,356 citizens have participated in self-testing, and 25,779 colonoscopies have been performed.
So far, 512,593 individuals have had cardiovascular health blood tests. Those identified with increased cardiovascular risk receive follow-up tests, such as electrocardiograms, blood pressure checks, and echocardiograms. Further diagnostics for ischemia continue as needed.
How Insured and Uninsured Citizens Can Participate
Anyone who hasn’t yet undergone preventive screening can join the “Prolamvano” program free of charge, regardless of insurance status, simply by using their AMKA (social security number).
For those utilizing paperless prescriptions, the process is even more streamlined—participants receive their electronic referral via SMS and/or email.
If paperless service isn’t available, individuals can visit https://proliptikes.gov.gr/, locate participating centers nearby, and quickly and easily book an appointment using their AMKA.
