Prince William is set to attend the funeral of Pope Francis this Saturday in St. Peter’s Square at the Vatican, representing his father, King Charles, as announced by Kensington Palace today.
The palace stated, “The Prince of Wales will be present at Pope Francis’ funeral on behalf of His Majesty the King.”
As the heir to the British throne, William continues a modern tradition within the royal family. In 2005, Queen Elizabeth was represented by her son Charles at the funeral of Pope John Paul II.
Additionally, the royal family of Spain has confirmed that King Felipe and Queen Letitia will also attend the funeral of Pope Francis on Saturday.
During a luncheon at the palace today, King Felipe reflected on the late Pope’s legacy, saying, “We will remember his dedication to the poorest, his advocacy for equality, his unwavering quest for a fairer and better world, as well as his kindness and sense of humor.”
King Philippe of Belgium and Queen Mathilde are also expected to be in attendance at the funeral.
