Earlier today, President Constantine Tasoulas welcomed Serbian Prime Minister Duro Macut at the Presidential Palace. The visit coincided with Mr. Macut’s honorary doctorate award from the Department of Medicine at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.
President Tasoulas highlighted the deep historical, geographical, cultural, and religious connections between Greece and Serbia, emphasizing these ties as the foundation for strengthening bilateral strategic cooperation for the benefit of both nations’ prosperity.
Further, he expressed concerns regarding recent geopolitical tensions and escalations in hostilities, particularly in the Middle East, underlining the importance of pursuing diplomatic solutions to regional conflicts. He condemned the horrific terrorist attack on the Greek Orthodox Church of Prophet Elijah in Damascus, stressing the necessity of protecting all religious communities in Syria, especially Christians.
In closing, he reaffirmed Greece’s commitment to supporting Serbia’s European journey, asserting that the integration of Western Balkan nations into the European community will significantly enhance regional stability and prosperity amid rising geopolitical uncertainties.
In response, Prime Minister Macut expressed gratitude for Greece’s role in supporting Serbia’s European aspirations and its commitment to Serbia’s territorial integrity.
He underscored Serbia’s alignment with Greece on the importance of safeguarding Orthodox Christian rights, specifically regarding the Holy Monastery of St. Catherine on Mount Sinai.
He also discussed opportunities for enhancing bilateral cooperation across various areas of mutual interest, particularly in infrastructure, connectivity, energy, and economic development.
Finally, he conveyed an invitation from the President of Serbia for an official visit to Greece, which was readily accepted.
