During his visit to Corfu, Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy Vasilis Kikilias announced the launch of various port infrastructure and desalination projects across Corfu and the Ionian islands, in line with AEGIS.
The minister emphasized, “The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, along with all relevant authorities, will expedite the tender processes to meet society’s needs.”
“Each year, approximately 3.4 million visitors travel to the island through various means—cruise ships, coastal ferries, recreational boating, and more. We aim to cater to these travelers while also prioritizing the well-being of our local residents, whom we respect and are committed to supporting.”
Kikilias noted, “This initiative demonstrates that with willpower, determination, perseverance, courage, and strength, we can ultimately assist those who are not just facing daily challenges. Our goal is to uplift our residents, ensuring that our islands maintain strong connections with the mainland, facilitating the movement of goods, and bolstering trade and the economy.”
On the topic of the Coast Guard, the minister revealed plans for the introduction of new vessels equipped with modern technology for the islands. He stated that the Corfu Port Authority, along with all Ionian Port Authorities, will undergo digitization, and advanced surveillance tools—including drones, sensors, cameras, and satellite imagery—will be provided to enhance the effectiveness of our port guards.
