A heated discussion has erupted online following a video depicting the new Pope Leo IV’s appearance in Rome. Social media users are speculating that he purposefully overlooked an individual holding a colorful flag—potentially an LGBTQ+ flag—as he entered the Paul VI Hall at the Vatican.
This moment was captured on Monday, May 12, during the Pope’s audience with 6,000 media representatives. As he moved through the audience, he waved and exchanged handshakes.
The clip quickly gained traction, generating various interpretations and controversy. Many viewed it as a sign of the Pope’s “deliberate disregard” for the LGBTQ+ movement.
Conversely, some pointed out that the flag featured in the footage is not a Pride flag but rather the “PACE” flag, a well-known Italian symbol of pacifism, which includes a rainbow and the word “peace.” This flag has been recognized since 1961. The Vatican has yet to issue any official comments regarding the video or the ensuing speculation.
During his address, Pope Leo IV spoke about press freedom and advocated for the release of imprisoned journalists worldwide. He reaffirmed the Church’s commitment to the “battle for truth” and conveyed a message of unity, denouncing disparaging and divisive language.
Concluding his speech, he echoed the words of his predecessor, Pope Francis: “Disarm communication from all prejudice and hatred… Listen to the voices of the weak, of those who have no voice. Let us disarm words, to help disarm the world,” he stated.
