Geert Wilders has issued a warning today to destabilize the fragile governing coalition if his stringent demands regarding illegal immigration are not met.
Following the November 2023 parliamentary elections, the Freedom Party (PVV) emerged as the largest party within the Dutch governing coalition. Should the PVV choose to exit, a political crisis could erupt, potentially leading to new elections.
“Our patience has run out. The voters who elevated the PVV to its leading status deserve a government that honors its promises,” Wilders stated during an impromptu press conference.
The PVV leader outlined a plan featuring ten measures he insists must be enacted “within a few weeks at the latest.”
These measures include enhancing border controls and deporting dual citizens who have been convicted of crimes.
“We must stop opening asylum centers. Let’s close them instead,” he asserted.
“We need to ensure that tens of thousands of Syrians return to their homeland. Any foreigners who seriously violate boundaries and behave improperly should also be expelled,” Wilders added. He warned that if his demands are not adequately addressed, “then we will withdraw.”
While Wilders acknowledged that the full execution of certain measures might take longer than a few weeks, he still urged for prompt decision-making.
Though Wilders has threatened to remove his party from the coalition previously, the government led by Prime Minister Dick Schoof has managed to endure so far.
In the elections, the PVV secured 37 seats in the 150-seat parliament, positioning it as the dominant party in the coalition.
