Piraeus Bank Supports Launch of World’s First LR2-Type Tanker Utilizing Wind Energy, Ushering in a New Era of Sustainable Shipping
Union Maritime Ltd., a British shipping company, has unveiled the “Brands Hatch,” the pioneering Aframax LR2 tanker designed to harness wind energy, significantly cutting fuel consumption and reducing carbon emissions. Piraeus Bank has financed the acquisition of this groundbreaking vessel, joining the movement towards sustainable shipping practices.
The naming ceremony for “Brands Hatch,” inspired by the renowned motor racing circuit in Kent, took place on Wednesday, June 11, in Shanghai. This innovative tanker boasts a capacity of 115,000 DWT and features three 37.5-meter WindWings®, ingeniously developed by the UK-based firm BAR Technologies.
This wind-powered technology is projected to lower the ship’s fuel consumption by around 1,200 tons annually, leading to a reduction of over 3,800 tons of CO2 emissions each year.
Piraeus Bank, with a portfolio of approximately $5 billion, finances all aspects of the shipping industry, actively promoting initiatives for a green transition as it embraces the future of sustainable shipping.
