The government spokesperson, Pavlos Marinakis, spoke with ERTNews about the necessity of safeguarding the institutional character of the Greek Orthodox and pilgrimage significance of the Holy Monastery of St. Catherine. He strongly condemned the opposition for their “irresponsible and careless attitude.” Additionally, he mentioned the Pre-Investigation Committee, asserting that “our parliamentary group will support the ND proposal.”
“The Prime Minister made it clear to his Egyptian counterpart that maintaining the Greek Orthodox and pilgrimage identity of the Holy Monastery of St. Catherine in Sinai is of utmost importance to us,” stated Mr. Marinakis. He highlighted that an agreement was reached between the two leaders on May 7 to address the matter through institutional means, while respecting religious traditions. He added, “A delegation will travel to Egypt on Monday for final discussions,” expressing confidence in a favorable resolution that would allow the monastery to continue its operations uninterrupted.
“This monastery is one of the most significant Orthodox monasteries worldwide, resonating deeply with every Greek,” he remarked. The spokesperson also criticized the opposition parties for their hasty announcements before fully understanding the decision, noting, “unfortunately, this is not the first time, and I fear it won’t be the last they politicize matters so quickly.”
He emphasized that all opposition parties “were quick to exploit an issue of profound religious and national importance. This is not a serious approach.” He particularly criticized the opposition leader, stating: “Mr. Androulakis announced at 6:30 PM that the Greek government is ‘deeply exposed’ before even reviewing the decision.” He added mockingly, “It’s reminiscent of coaches on a podium. Without insight or information, they judge, creating confusion and anxiety among the public. Politics cannot operate this way.”
Marinakis also commented on the clergy’s statements, including those from Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens and All Greece, who referred to “yet another historical cancellation.” He stated that “it is completely understandable for them to express their concern,” but noted that “the government has been diligently addressing the issue for a year to provide an institutional solution and secure the monastery’s rights.”
