Members of PASOK’s Political Center voiced strong opposition to the government on several critical issues during a recent meeting, including Turkey’s role in European defense, public employee evaluations, and the situation in Gaza.
On the matter of Turkey’s involvement in European defense, Nikos Androulakis remarked:
“The government attempts to frame a diplomatic Waterloo as a ‘window of opportunity’ by endorsing a country with strained EU relations—one that threatens Greece as a NATO ally, bears responsibility for the brutal Attila invasion of Cyprus, and disregards human rights at home.”
Haris Doukas emphasized that, while Greece shouldn’t outright dismiss the idea, Turkey must fulfill certain conditions to participate, including signing the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
PASOK’s Initiative on Gaza
PASOK is set to launch a diplomatic initiative on Gaza led by its leadership, aiming to propose a comprehensive action framework to the Party of European Socialists and the Socialist International in the upcoming days.
Evaluation and Meritocracy in the Public Sector
Regarding meritocracy and evaluations in the public sector, PASOK has made it clear that tenure is not the core issue. The party’s stance from its headquarters on Harilaou Trikoupi Street is as follows:
“PASOK is the party that has genuinely advanced accountability, transparency, and meritocracy. Conversely, New Democracy is notorious for clientelism and favoritism, favoring no-bid contracts while appointing most department heads and general directors rather than selecting them based on merit.
We can legislate to enhance employee evaluations or assist review boards in addressing underperforming public servants.
However, this topic should not devolve into another instance of sterile political conflict, as the government did with the controversial ‘university police’. Instead of fostering meritocracy, the current administration is promoting corruption, as illustrated by the EU-wide scandal surrounding OPEKEPE.
New Appointment Announced
During the meeting, Mr. Androulakis announced the appointment of Giannis Vardakastanis as the new Secretary of the Central Organizing Committee (K.O.E.S.) in preparation for the upcoming party congress.
