The government’s spokesperson, Pavlos Marinakis, has announced the postponement of the third Greek Basketball League final between Panathinaikos and Olympiacos. This match was originally set for Wednesday at OAKA and the decision comes as part of measures implemented in response to the disturbing events that took place during Sunday night’s derby at the SEF (Peace and Friendship Stadium).
Live coverage of the government’s announcements on new basketball measures is currently in progress.
Mr. Marinakis stated:
“Fifteen months ago, the government initiated a series of measures aimed at curbing violence in professional sports.”
“From the outset, we have been dedicated to enforcing these measures, and the implementation of penalties has shown that where there is a will, there is indeed a result.”
The incidents from yesterday do not reflect well on Greek sports.
Where there are criminal and disciplinary responsibilities, they will be addressed.
The third final set for Wednesday is now postponed. The owners of both basketball clubs are to meet with Deputy Sports Minister Mr. Vroutsis on the same day to provide explicit commitments; otherwise, the championship will face suspension.
