Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni discussed the challenges within Greek tourism, the implementation of relevant laws, and her personal experiences during her divorce in an interview with Giorgos Evgenidis on protothema’s show Direct. She candidly spoke about her legal dispute with her ex-husband, Minos Matsas, revealing instances of blackmail and underscoring the unique challenges faced by women in politics when subjected to personal attacks.
Historic Trends and New Obstacles
Kefalogianni highlighted that Greek tourism is currently experiencing a dynamic phase, with record arrivals and revenues over the past two years. However, she emphasized the necessity for quality growth and sustainable resource management, advocating for a year-round tourism season instead of a summer-centric one. She noted, “In 2024, we registered double-digit growth in the first five months, indicating success in extending the tourism season.” She stressed the importance of actions taken before and after peak periods.
Additionally, she pointed out the potential for Greece to offer more diverse experiences beyond traditional summer hotspots.
The Renaissance of Athens and Airbnb Oversight
Regarding Athens, the minister remarked on the city’s rapid transformation into a vibrant destination. “Previously, Athens wasn’t considered a destination; it was merely a stopover,” she explained. She credited strategic promotions for converting the city into a year-round city-break hotspot.
With respect to short-term rentals like Airbnb, Ms. Kefalogianni announced the establishment of a tighter regulatory framework that allows for inspections to ensure compliance with the law. “At this moment, we do not need to discuss new restrictions,” she stated, while acknowledging that the rapid growth of short-term rentals in some areas has not yet led to overtourism.
She also mentioned strategies for Greece’s popular destinations, such as Santorini and Mykonos, emphasizing the need for each to balance growth with sustainability. For Santorini, a special international campaign will be launched to address concerns following recent seismic activity.
Regulations for Camper Vans
Kefalogianni addressed the topic of camper vans, highlighting that sustainability necessitates clear regulations and respect for public spaces. She stated that camper vans are only permitted to park in designated areas according to the Highway Code and not on beaches, forest lands, or archaeological sites, with fines for violators. “We’re simply stating the rules. Rights and freedoms in public spaces must be observed by all,” she asserted.
Personal Struggles in Custody
Olga Kefalogianni opened up about her personal journey, detailing her intense custody battle for her children with Minos Matsas. “I was blackmailed, pushing me to go to court for my children,” she disclosed. “Being a public figure, it’s easy for someone to threaten you—either comply or face destruction. It requires immense strength to withstand that. I will continue forward with my truth and love for my children,” she concluded, adding, “No matter what happens, it’s crucial to rise with greater empathy and understanding.”
