Amidst the “useless” plastic waste that pollutes our oceans and threatens the global ecosystem, an inspiring vision emerged.
With the backing of the Portuguese Embassy in Athens, which wholeheartedly embraced the concept from the outset, a diverse group—a director, a talented pianist, a fashion designer, two municipalities (Astypalea in Greece and Cascais in Portugal), and two specialized recycling facilities—came together to create a symbolic project that transcends borders, languages, and time.

The outcome was remarkable. The children of Astypalea, envisioning a brighter future, were inspired by this initiative to volunteer in cleaning their island’s beaches, collecting plastic waste to be sent to factories in Portugal.
This was more than just an artistic event; it was a living narrative—a journey through music, fashion, ecology, tourism, and collaboration that united two countries and their creative energies into a shared message of hope.
At the heart of the project was a stunning 20-meter-long dress, inspired by Portuguese azulejos—intricate ceramic tiles that tell vivid stories through color and pattern. Fashion designer Maria Vytinidou transformed this fabric into a dynamic piece of art, brought to life by pianist Elena Xydia, who performed in breathtaking locations across both Greece and Portugal. From the shores of Astypalea with the Aegean Sea as a backdrop, to the cliffs of Cabo da Roca facing the Atlantic, the dress fluttered with every note, embodying a flag of hope for the future. It enveloped the human form and the actions in sound, breathing emotion into the message.

The Portuguese Embassy in Athens acted as a cultural, diplomatic, and artistic liaison, connecting creators who may speak different languages but share a unified goal: to remind the world that beauty can—and should—be sustainable, and that the protection of our oceans is a collective responsibility.
The Piano Project brings together two nations, artists from various fields, and fulfills a mission: to demonstrate that art can indeed change the world. From waste, luxury emerges. From collaboration, the future is born.
In these challenging times marked by multiple global crises, this project serves as a reminder that there is still space for beauty, empathy, and hope. When Greece and Portugal unite… history is made.
