The mother of the infant appears to have been truthful. Her baby was discovered on Wednesday afternoon in a bag beside a garbage bin in Alimos.
Surveillance footage confirms that the child was abducted by an unknown man. After taking the baby from her, he abandoned the infant next to a trash can.
Authorities are searching for a tall dark-skinned man. Initial reviews of the surveillance footage show the mother, a Roma woman, with her baby begging outside a supermarket. At one point, the suspect approaches her, suggesting they go inside so he can buy her something. Once inside, while they are in the diaper aisle, the man takes the child and flees.
The child’s grandmother, who was with them, immediately began shouting and reported the abduction to the police.
It is believed that the man left the scene in a taxi and headed straight to Alimos.
Preliminary reports indicate that the child does not show signs of abuse; however, a forensic pathologist is scheduled to examine the infant today.
The infant’s grandmother has been arrested for child neglect, and the mother has been located.
The family was living under the bridge on Petrou Rallis.
