Authorities have identified the mother of the fetus discovered behind a kiosk in Oreokastro, Thessaloniki. The 30-year-old woman informed police that she was unaware she had experienced a miscarriage.
Police located the woman using surveillance footage and local information. She reported to officers that she was attending a nearby wedding when she felt ill and started bleeding, which led her to leave the event.
According to her account, she went to the rear of the kiosk, noticed significant bleeding, but did not comprehend that a miscarriage had occurred due to the poor lighting.
Upon reaching the hospital, she was made aware of the incident, and the prosecutor ordered her transfer for a gynecological examination to confirm the validity of her claims, assisted by a forensic doctor.
Location of the fetal discovery:
The area in Thessaloniki where the fetus was located.
The kiosk owner described, “This morning, when we opened the shop, we found a deceased fetus near the kiosk. It was very small, about 12-13 centimeters, and appeared to be the result of a miscarriage. It still had the placenta and umbilical cord. Initially, due to the dark and rainy weather, we thought it might be a kitten. However, upon closer inspection of its shape, limbs, and size, we realized it was a fetus.”
She further noted that the fetus seemed to be in the third or fourth month of gestation and that they immediately alerted the authorities. “The woman must have been in distress. She likely sought refuge in the back, as it is secluded, and miscarried there. This area has a lot of foot traffic, so it could have been anyone, even a passerby. At night, there are no open businesses here,” she remarked.
