Today, at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia, Cyprus President Nicos Christodoulides officially welcomed India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has been on an official visit to Cyprus since yesterday, concluding today.
During the welcome, President Christodoulides emphasized that the Prime Minister’s visit signifies a strong political intention to enhance bilateral ties across various sectors, including economy, trade, defense, security, technology, tourism, and connectivity.
“The Joint Statement we will adopt today regarding our partnership,” stated Christodoulides, “marks a new chapter in the relations between Cyprus and India, as well as at the broader European and international level. Cyprus stands as a reliable and secure ally for India in the strategically important Eastern Mediterranean and the surrounding Middle East. Additionally, as an EU member, Cyprus serves as India’s gateway to Europe, and during its presidency of the EU Council starting on January 1, 2026, we aim to further enhance India’s strategic ties with the EU.”
President Christodoulides expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Modi for India’s consistent support regarding the Cyprus issue and its efforts to end Turkish occupation and reunite the island. He added, “I also want to officially convey the Republic of Cyprus’s support in your ongoing fight against both international and cross-border terrorism. As a sign of the significance we attribute to your visit and the new collaborative chapter we are embarking on, I have the honor, on behalf of the Republic of Cyprus and its people, to bestow upon you our highest distinction.”
The Cypriot President then awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Macarius III to the Prime Minister of India.
Upon receiving the honor, Prime Minister Modi remarked, “This recognition reflects our rich cultural heritage and the philosophy of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,’ which means ‘The world is one family.’ I humbly accept this award on behalf of all Indians. I dedicate it to the amicable relations between India and Cyprus, our shared values, and mutual respect. This medal symbolizes our steadfast commitment to the peace, security, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and prosperity of our nations. Your Excellency, I regard this honor as a significant responsibility to strengthen the friendship between India and Cyprus, which I am determined to uphold. I am confident that our collaboration will reach even greater heights, as we work together not only for national development but also for global peace and security. Thank you.”
