Kyriakos Mitsotakis is currently in The Hague attending the NATO Summit. Upon his arrival, the Greek Prime Minister noted that Greece allocates 3% of its GDP to defense and committed to investing over €25 billion in defense over the next two decades.
“As a nation in the Eastern Mediterranean, we support the ceasefire brokered by President Trump between Iran and Israel. However, it’s crucial to understand that a resolution can only emerge through proactive diplomacy,” stated Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
The Greek Stance at the NATO Summit
The Prime Minister confidently addresses the need for increased defense expenditures among NATO member nations.
Mr. Mitsotakis acknowledges the validity of Mr. Trump’s remarks from his first term, though the ongoing conflict in Ukraine has changed the landscape significantly.
During today’s discussions at the Summit, Mr. Mitsotakis is expected to underscore Greece’s role as a stable and dependable ally, having consistently met NATO’s defense spending target of 2% of GDP even during challenging economic periods, thereby enhancing the Alliance’s capabilities in a region vital for both regional and global security.
Additionally, he will address recent developments in the Middle East, reinforcing that Greece’s defense spending is at 3% of its GDP in light of various security challenges.
This positions Greece among the core group of NATO nations that exceed the current 2% commitment, ranking 5th in terms of defense spending as a percentage of GDP. The Prime Minister will also discuss the nation’s 12-year arms program, which is valued at €25 billion.
Mr. Mitsotakis is slated to meet with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on the sidelines, and possibly engage with other leaders, though there are no scheduled one-on-one discussions with Turkish President Erdoğan.
