As part of Greece’s Presidency of the United Nations Security Council, a significant event focusing on “Enhancing Maritime Security through International Cooperation for Global Stability” is scheduled for May 20, 2025.
The meeting will be led by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, featuring presentations from UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Melina Travlou, President of the Union of Greek Shipowners, and Christian Bueger, Professor of International Relations at the University of Copenhagen and researcher at UNIDIR.
In light of current military and geopolitical conflicts that threaten the safety of crews, ships, and cargo, the Greek presidency aims to emphasize the importance of “Enhanced Maritime Security through International Cooperation for Global Stability.”
The maritime community consistently asserts that the International Maritime Organization (IMO), a UN agency, serves as the global regulator for shipping.
Evangelos Sekeris, Greece’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, recently remarked, “We raised this issue at a high level to underscore Greece’s commitment to this critical matter.
The approach will be ‘holistic’, concentrating on freedom of navigation, supply chains, and international collaboration.”
In the context of the international conference “Our Ocean 2024,” Melina Travlou expressed, “The sea is our home, and we are committed to honoring and protecting it.”
“We are dedicated to environmental protection and actively participate in global initiatives,” she emphasized, adding:
“In line with our vision for a sustainable future, we continually invest in new technologies.
We take pride in leading an industry that ensures the well-being of humanity by supporting global trade and providing the most efficient means of transporting essential goods and energy, which helps maintain the standard of living worldwide.”
