Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed his country’s “deep concern” over the “sudden escalation” of tensions in the Middle East stemming from Israel’s military actions against Iran, as reported by the state-run Xinhua news agency on Tuesday.
This marks Xi’s first public remarks on the Iran-Israel conflict since it began on Friday. He indicated that China, a significant diplomatic and economic ally of Iran, opposes “any actions that undermine the sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity” of other nations.
During a meeting with Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev in Astana, Kazakhstan’s capital, Xi stated, “Military conflict is not a solution to problems, and escalating regional tensions do not serve the common interests of the international community.”
Xi is currently in Astana for the second China-Central Asia Summit.
He urged all parties to work towards de-escalation of the conflict as soon as possible, reiterating that China is ready to collaborate with all parties “to play a constructive role in restoring peace and stability” in the region.
