The Ministry of National Economy and Finance quickly addressed a statement from the Association of Relatives of Deceased and Burn Victims concerning appeals filed by the Region of Attica and the Municipalities of Rafina and Marathon. These appeals challenge court rulings favoring victims of the devastating wildfire in Mati, despite a legal provision that instructs public authorities to refrain from pursuing legal actions related to this incident and the Mandra flood.
According to sources from the Ministry:
“Minister of National Economy and Finance, Kyriakos Pierrakakis, reached out to Attica’s Regional Governor, Nikos Hardalias, and Marathon’s Mayor, Stergios Tsirkas, following complaints from the Association. They indicated that these local government entities continued to file appeals against lower court decisions, even after the recent law was enacted which prohibits public sector and local authorities from seeking legal remedies in these matters.”
Both the Region of Attica and the Municipalities committed to promptly withdrawing any such appeals, attributing the situation to procedural mistakes by their legal teams that do not align with the new legislation.
Recently, the State Legal Council has withdrawn from four appeal cases (with reference numbers 3088/2025, 1880/2025, 2462/2025, and 2463/2025). This withdrawal approach will be applied to all similar cases, and local governments at both levels are expected to adopt the same practice.
The government’s stance is clear, formalized through the passage of Law 5193/2025, Article 224. Additionally, a new bill is set to be introduced that will outline more defined and logical criteria for when the State can initiate legal proceedings against citizens.
