Maria Syrengela has officially announced her resignation as secretary of the New Democracy party in a Facebook post.
Accompanying her post with a photo alongside Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Ms. Syrengela stated that personal reasons have led her to step down. She explained, “These circumstances prevent me from dedicating the necessary time to prepare for the upcoming New Democracy Congress. Prioritizing the party’s best interests, I made this difficult yet conscious decision.”
She further remarked, “Positions are not permanent; they do not belong to us. While one can strive for many things from a pivotal role, it’s essential to recognize when it’s time to step aside.” Ms. Syrengela expressed her gratitude to the Prime Minister for the trust he placed in her to become the first woman in this role in the party’s 50-year history.
“I will continue to advocate for the citizens of West Athens in Parliament, fighting for the long-neglected infrastructure and meaningful projects. Additionally, in my role as a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, I will keep championing democracy and human rights across Europe with the same passion I’ve maintained since my youth,” she concluded.
Maria Syrengela’s Full Post
There are times when one must reflect and make difficult choices. This is one of those moments. Yesterday, I informed Prime Minister and New Democracy President Kyriakos Mitsotakis of my resignation as Secretary of the Political Committee for personal reasons.
I deeply thank him for the trust and honor of being the first woman to hold this position in the party’s history. This milestone represents all the New Democrat women, especially the youth, who have fought for the party’s ideals. It also demonstrates our commitment to equal opportunities in politics—perhaps the strongest motivation for my involvement.
Due to personal circumstances, I am unable to commit the necessary time to prepare for the upcoming New Democracy Congress. Prioritizing the party’s well-being, I chose this challenging yet deliberate path. Remember, positions are transient; you must recognize when it’s time to move on.
I traveled extensively throughout Greece, dedicating myself to building an effective political organization that remains dynamic and rooted in Greek society.
A heartfelt thank you to all who believed in me: my colleagues on the New Democracy Political Committee, my fellow party members, and my family who have supported me through the sacrifices of political life.
I will continue to represent the citizens of West Athens in Parliament, striving to reclaim decades of lost progress in infrastructure and meaningful projects. As a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, I will perpetuate my commitment to democracy and human rights in Europe with unwavering passion.
Maria.
