In a strong statement about the necessity of safeguarding Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs), French President Emanuel Macron emphasized the European Union’s unwavering commitment to the territorial integrity of partners like Greece and Cyprus, making a pointed reference to Turkey.
Speaking alongside Ursula von der Leyen and Kyriakos Mitsotakis at the UN Oceans Summit in Nice, Macron highlighted the importance of protecting the EEZs of EU member states. He asserted, “We must stand firm when the territorial sovereignty of our partners is at risk, especially our friends, the Greeks and Cypriots.”
“To achieve our goal of conserving 30% of marine protected areas, combat illegal and uncontrolled fishing, and support our scientific efforts, we need to defend our exclusive economic zones. It is vital to remain resolute when the territorial sovereignty of partners like Greece and Cyprus is under threat. We must safeguard our territorial waters and maritime zones everywhere,” Macron stated.
“Consequently, the security and defense initiatives undertaken by all Europeans, alongside the Commission, must integrate the oceanic aspect into their framework. Our commitments will lack credibility if we are unable to follow through on them,” he added.
