There is a diplomatic “fever” surrounding the situation in Ukraine, with leaders from Germany, France, Britain, and Poland visiting Kiev to participate in a teleconference for the “coalition of the willing.” Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is set to join the discussion at 11:45.
Emmanuel Macron, Friedrich Merz, and Keir Starmer traveled to the Ukrainian capital by train, sharing their journey on social media, where they will meet Donald Tusk.
In a joint statement, the leaders of Europe’s four largest military powers criticized Putin for “hindering efforts to achieve a lasting peace.”
“Alongside the US, we urge Russia to agree to an unconditional ceasefire for 30 days to foster an environment conducive to negotiations for a fair and enduring peace,” the statement declared.
“We are poised to support peace discussions as soon as possible, address the technicalities of implementing the ceasefire, and prepare for a comprehensive peace agreement. It is imperative that the bloodshed ceases, that Russia halts its unlawful invasion, and that Ukraine can thrive as a secure, sovereign nation within its internationally recognized borders for generations,” the four leaders asserted, vowing to “escalate our support for Ukraine. Until Russia consents to a lasting ceasefire, we will amplify our pressure on the Russian military efforts.”
This visit by the leaders comes just one day after Vladimir Putin’s display of strength during the Victory Day parade in Moscow.
Trump Urges an End to the Conflict
US President Donald Trump conveyed a new message to the leaders of Russia and Ukraine, urging them to end the war with a call for a 30-day ceasefire.
As he prepared for a tour of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar starting Monday, Trump was asked what message he wished to deliver to Russian President Vladimir Putin, especially after the US Embassy in Kiev warned of “potentially significant” airstrikes on the horizon.
“I have a message for both sides: End this war,” Trump stated, addressing both Putin and Zelensky. “Stop this foolish war! That’s my message to both of them,” he told reporters in the Oval Office.
US Embassy’s Alert
Concurrently, the US Embassy in Kiev issued a warning on its website about potential airstrikes in the near future, advising citizens to be ready for immediate shelter in response to any alarm regarding airstrikes.
