A 32-year-old mother of two—whose children were discovered with cigarette burns—will be transferred to Korydallos Prison following a visit to the General Hospital of Larissa last Saturday due to one child’s respiratory problems.
In her extensive testimony before the Larissa examining magistrate, the mother maintained her assertion that the children’s biological father was responsible for the burns on both her 5-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter.
On Wednesday, the mother’s 50-year-old boyfriend, who was facing an arrest warrant, also surrendered to authorities. A child psychiatrist’s evaluation revealed significant evidence against him, as the children reportedly identified him as the individual who inflicted the burns.
Doctor’s Testimony
According to a report by protothema.gr, a doctor described her discussions with the children, who mentioned that someone named Giannis had hurt them.
“While the mother spoke with the police, I took the children aside. I asked the little girl if her father hits her. She looked serious and nodded yes. When I inquired again, she gave the same response. I then asked if her father also hits her mother, and she nodded once more.
I proceeded to ask her if her father caused the marks on her arm, and she confirmed it. When I asked how, she mimed extinguishing a cigarette. Then, I asked the boy about the injury on his cheek, and he indicated ‘Giannis.’ This raised my curiosity about whether they were referring to their biological father or a different father figure.
I later approached the mother again. She appeared tense and nervous, claiming she felt dizzy and began limping. When I asked her who Giannis was, she described him as a man from the village who helps them at home.
I pressed her again about whether someone was hitting the children, if she was concealing anything, or if she felt guilty. She denied all accusations, but her demeanor suggested otherwise. At one point, I asked the children if they were hungry, to which they responded affirmatively, and the mother showed no concern. I decided to get them something to eat myself.
Lastly, I should mention that during their time in the ER, the children didn’t scratch or exhibit signs of itching, contrary to the mother’s claims that the marks were due to skin reactions,” the doctor testified.
The 50-year-old man has appeared before the magistrate, receiving a postponement for his testimony today. In his initial police statement, he denied all allegations.
Authorities Investigating the 32-Year-Old’s Background
Meanwhile, authorities are working to unravel the case and identify the source of the children’s injuries, including analyzing drawings found on the 5-year-old boy.
Police are also scrutinizing the 32-year-old woman’s background for potential connections to others.
Reliable sources indicate that the biological father of the children has been summoned and is anticipated to testify before the magistrate this coming Monday. The mother had filed a report against him on May 10, accusing him of abusing her and the children.
The 5-year-old boy and 6-year-old girl continue to receive care at the pediatric clinic of the General Hospital of Larissa, where they are receiving both medical attention and psychological support.
The children’s hospitalization will continue until the prosecutor determines whether they will be placed with relatives or in a child welfare facility.
