This afternoon, members of the New Democracy party will gather at their offices on Pireos Street to celebrate the election of a new party secretary. Former Minister Kostas Skrekas is anticipated to be elected unanimously, succeeding Maria Syringela. In the days leading up to the meeting, he has been making calls to secure signatures for his candidacy and discuss his vision with various factions within the party.
The gathering will also provide an opportunity for Kyriakos Mitsotakis to signal the party’s readiness for an electoral campaign.
In just a few days, the government will mark two years into its second term, signaling the beginning of the latter half of this term. Mitsotakis is expected to set the stage for the upcoming 2027 elections, potentially hinting at a strategy for late 2026.
This autumn, the party will embark on a congress path, along with essential internal party elections that will precede leadership elections at both prefectural and municipal levels, as well as delegate elections. The congress, scheduled for late 2025, will elect a new Political Committee for the party, despite its infrequent meetings.
During his upcoming speech, Mitsotakis is likely to reflect on the accomplishments of the past six years and outline strategic challenges ahead. Recently, he discussed Greece 2030 at a Council of Ministers meeting, while Kostis Hatzidakis, the deputy prime minister, emphasized the importance of a productive economy, modern governance, and legislative opportunities as priorities for the next five years. Reports indicate that the government is actively developing a political narrative leading towards the next elections, where Mitsotakis aims to secure a third term.
Date for the Pre-Investigation
In today’s statement, Mitsotakis is also expected to briefly address the Tempi tragedy and respond to recent developments with coded remarks. According to protothema.gr, the prevailing scenario is that he will attend Parliament for the debate on proposals to establish an Investigative Committee on Wednesday, marking a significant step for him, especially since he refrained from commenting during similar meetings previously. The prime minister is seeking political accountability on this matter, particularly following suggestions to form a Pre-Investigation Committee, which would include potential charges of treason.
Stability
Mitsotakis is also expected to emphasize the critical nature of political stability during this period of significant geopolitical turmoil, highlighted by the recent conflict involving Israel and Iran. “Now more than ever, we need restraint and composure. I reiterated that Iran must not develop a nuclear arsenal. The solution lies in diplomacy. I strongly advocated for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the release of all hostages, and unimpeded humanitarian aid,” Mitsotakis stated in a recent note following a phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He also spoke yesterday with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
