The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki has elected Kyriakos Anastasiadis, a prominent Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery, as its new Dean. An esteemed scientist, he has made significant contributions to both Medicine and Higher Education.
From his early days as a medical student, Professor Anastasiadis has demonstrated that he views excellence as a personal commitment rather than a mere show of capability. His philosophy is grounded in discipline, intrinsic motivation, and a strong ethical foundation. He believes that doctors should embody empathy and a deep sense of responsibility toward their patients, fostering a lasting bond of trust. This perspective is so integral to his approach that he emphasizes its importance in training young doctors.
A champion of scientific advancement, Professor Anastasiadis goes beyond standard surgical practices by embracing cutting-edge techniques, such as robotic surgery. He underscores the necessity of collaboration with top-tier international research institutions, advocating for the use of artificial intelligence to enhance, rather than replace, the role of the physician.
Statement from the New Rector
“It is a profound honor for me to be appointed as the new Rector of the Aristotle University today. I extend my heartfelt thanks to my fellow Council members for their support and to all who believed in my strategic vision,” remarked Anastasiadis.
He continued: “Now is the moment for all of us to focus on advancing Aristotle University. We are at the cusp of a pivotal restart essential for its sustainability and growth.
As we prepare to enter our second century of operation, our university aims to be a beacon of public, international, and innovative academia—dedicated to Education, Research, and Freedom of Speech while contributing significantly to the economic and cultural development of our nation. Much work lies ahead, and I will be here to support you. Together, we will move forward united, honoring Aristotle, our science, and our students.”
The Educational Role and Vision
As a professor, Anastasiadis asserts that a university should be a catalyst for social change and career preparation, advocating for a strong link between educational institutions and the job market. He highlights the significance of English-language programs, like the medical curriculum at AUTH, which facilitate international collaboration and dialogue. He envisions academic life as a space for critical thinking, research, and lifelong learning.
Addressing the critical issue of access to higher education, Professor Anastasiadis has expressed concern over the stress students face during entrance exams and the transition from secondary to university education. He emphasizes the importance of resilience when confronting challenges, urging students to embrace difficulties as opportunities for genuine learning.
His vision centers on collective progress over individual achievement, advocating for the public university and the National Health System to function as an interconnected entity characterized by transparency, collaboration, and a commitment to the individual. He encourages young people to nurture their enthusiasm and maintain mental well-being.
About the Electoral Process
Following two unsuccessful attempts to elect a new Rector, the eleven-member Administrative Council successfully elected Professor Anastasiadis on November 11, 2025, with a total of 7 votes out of 11. Efstratios Stylianides received two votes, while two members voted against.
In the election process, Professor Anastasiadis represented the Medical School, while Professor Stylianides was from the Department of Spatial Planning and Development Engineering. This election was initiated after the former Rector, Professor Haralambos Feidas, was disqualified by the Council of State.
The voting commenced on June 6, where each candidate received two votes and seven members voted against. A second vote occurred on June 10, resulting in three votes for Anastasiadis and two for Stylianides. Ultimately, today’s vote required a simple majority to finalize the election.
