“Istanbul is ours forever,” declared Recep Tayyip Erdogan during the 572nd anniversary celebration of the Fall of Constantinople. He emphasized that modern Turkey continues to embody the “spirit of innovation of Sultan Mohammed II,” who transformed wartime strategies during his era.
“The Conqueror was not merely an accomplished military leader and statesman; he was also a visionary scientist and a pioneer in modern engineering. The artillery he developed revolutionized warfare and is remembered in history. Today, we strive to uphold that legacy of knowledge and innovation handed down by our ancestors, ensuring its continuation for future generations. We are actively redefining contemporary warfare through drones, unmanned aerial vehicles, and advanced technologies,” Erdogan stated during a ceremony in the Beykoz district on the Asian side of the Bosphorus, where he launched public parks in the suburbs of Constantinople via video call.
“Today marks the 572nd anniversary of the Fall of Constantinople, one of the most significant chapters in our history. On May 29, 1453, a tactical genius and victorious commander led an army that was wholeheartedly dedicated to its mission, culminating in a remarkable 53-day siege. This victory was achieved under the leadership of the 21-year-old conqueror. May this anniversary be blessed, and may Allah smile upon the soldiers and their commander,” Erdogan remarked.
Further reflecting on the anniversary, Erdogan stated: “The Fall of Constantinople represents a triumph of knowledge, determination, and faith. The Ottoman forces had besieged the city four times previously without success. Upon ascending to the throne at the age of 19, the conqueror immediately set out to implement innovative strategies, technologies, and weaponry. He commissioned master craftsman Saruka to construct powerful cannons designed to breach the seemingly impenetrable walls of Constantinople. These cannons, which fired projectiles weighing hundreds of kilograms, were first tested in Hadrianople before being transported to Constantinople, where he oversaw every aspect of their deployment.
Initially, the siege, which commenced on April 6, did not yield immediate results. However, the accomplishments in the final 23 days led to a victory that became historic. The Conqueror cleverly transported ships over land, strategically planning every step leading to the anticipated Fall. This is crucial: as the newly created “Shahi” cannons began bombarding the walls, the siege’s dynamics shifted. The first breach occurred at the Gate of St. Roman (Topkapi), and the initial banner was raised on Topkapi’s walls. By midday on May 29, Constantinople and Hagia Sophia belonged to us forever.”
