The National Intelligence Service is investigating a connection between two Azeri men who were arrested in Cyprus and Crete. The aim is to determine whether they are linked and if the request for their “services” originated from the same group.
The first individual was apprehended last Saturday in Cyprus, while the second was detained yesterday (June 23) in Souda. The Azeri man arrested in Cyprus is reportedly an agent of Iran’s intelligence services and was acting independently, having monitored activities at the British base in Akrotiri, where RAF aircraft are stationed.
The second suspect allegedly rented a hotel near the airbase and photographed the facility at Souda.
This 26-year-old arrived in Chania on June 18 and specifically requested a room with a view of Souda harbor, booking his stay for a month. During his time at the hotel, he only left his room for essentials.
After his arrest, authorities discovered that he had taken over 5,000 photographs of the port’s entrance and exit from his room.
He was transferring these images using encrypted software, and officials are currently investigating to identify the intended recipient.
Informed sources told protothema.gr that law enforcement is working to trace the digital footprints left by these communications to uncover the recipient and fully understand the accused’s activities.
