“An oasis for walkers and nature enthusiasts.” This is how the Municipality of Hydra characterizes the island on its website, highlighting its distinctiveness, where all wheeled vehicles are legally banned. Yet, rules can be overlooked—particularly when there’s no one to enforce them. Consequently, this otherwise stunning island, rich in archaeological and natural wonders with its unique architecture, has been overrun by cars, motorcycles, bicycles, and notably, trendy scooters, often preferred over walking.
Following a report from protothema.gr about the influx of vehicles on the island, and ahead of a related meeting at the Ministry of Culture scheduled for tomorrow, Hydra’s mayor, Giorgos Koukoudakis, stated that the municipality lacks the authority to impose fines to protect the cultural heritage. He added that “a series of major public infrastructure projects” are currently underway, necessitating vehicle use, but this will “significantly decrease after the end of May.”
